Ohio Police Officer Placed on Leave for Punching Miami University Football Player During Arrest

In Oxford, Ohio, a police officer was placed on administrative leave following an incident involving Miami University football player Devin Johnson. The incident, which took place outside Brick Street bar in November, is under investigation. Johnson reportedly entered the bar through an exit gate, pushing past an employee. A subsequent altercation with the bar manager led to Johnson being accused of assault.

Oxford police claim that Johnson resisted arrest, requiring additional officers to help handcuff him. However, Johnson disputes the police's version of events, especially regarding pushing anyone inside the bar. The 20-year-old defensive back faces charges of resisting arrest, assault, criminal trespass, and underage intoxication, to which he has pleaded not guilty.

Surveillance footage circulated on social media shows Johnson being held down and allegedly punched by an officer. This footage, which has been described as "deeply disturbing" by Johnson’s attorney Ryan Agee, was not initially included in the police investigation. Agee has called for an independent investigation, citing lack of communication from the Oxford police and potential oversight of crucial details.

The officer involved, Matthew Blauvelt, is on paid leave during the inquiry. Miami University, expressing concern over the incident, has reached out to Johnson and contacted the City of Oxford. Oxford's Mayor William Snavely emphasized the city's stance against excessive force and assured a fair and transparent investigation.

Brick Street bar, while not commenting directly on the incident, acknowledged the disturbing nature of the video and expressed relief that no medical attention was required for Johnson or their employee. The bar also expressed a desire to meet with Johnson after the break, recognizing the complex nature of such emotionally charged situations.
